Attempted police crackdown on Wall Street — in pictures

by Jerome Roos on September 25, 2011

Post image for Attempted police crackdown on Wall Street — in pictures

A week since the occupation started, the protests on Wall Street are only growing stronger. Thousands marched on Saturday. The authorities went berserk.

Dear reader: the unprecedented interest in this article has swamped our servers. We’ve unfortunately been forced to remove the pictures from the website in order to prevent further crashes. Luckily, you can still find the pictures on Paul Weiskel’s Flickr profile. Thank you for your interest and sorry for the inconvenience!

#OCCUPYWALLSTREET keeps on growing. Today marked the largest protest since the start of the movement, exactly a week ago. Signs are mounting that the authorities are starting to get increasingly anxious about the potential of the protests to spin “out of control” and go viral.

And so today, just days after Mayor Bloomberg assured protesters they would be “free to express their opinion”, the NYPD went into Mubarak mode, attacking peaceful protesters and making mass arrests of law-abiding citizens for the sole purpose of repressing political dissent. Undoubtedly, as happened in Barcelona before, the police repression will only further reinvigorate the protests.

Organizers claim that at least 80 were arrested and multiple people maced and kettled by police, including innocent bystanders, a number of photographers and also protest organizers — in direct violation of the constitutional right to the freedom of the press, of popular assembly and of political protest.

Once more, the real face of American democracy is revealed through these powerful images by Paul Weiskel. Not a single banker has been arrested for crashing the world economy in 2008, but by now, dozens of law-abiding citizens are in locked up in police stations around New York simply for expressing their inconvenient opinion.

I am so proud of all of you young people who see things as they really are and made the decision to take a stand. I’m with you 100%. There are many of us in California watching and waiting for more info and pictures. Can’t believe the media is not all over this… We are with you all the way. Greed has reached its limits and we all have suffered everywhere in the country because of a few….
Than you !

Angel September 26, 2011 at 03:20

The madia is not allowed to air this type of news. There is no freedom of the press!!!

Joseph R September 26, 2011 at 03:23

If you’re in the California area you should check out #OccupySanFransico, the California branch of #OccupyWallStreet.

We need U the “People!!!” we must fight for our DEMOCRACY NOW!!!!; which isn’t ours anymore!!!; hasn’t been ours for about 30 years roughly!!; its been dictated by CORPORATIONS/POLITICS!!! in seek of their own best interest, not that of humanity; in a sense, if we don’t stifle this NOW!! it will LEAD to our inevitable faith which will lead ultimately to the extinction of the human race as we know it, and others that inhabit OUR beautiful Plant which is a wreak right now and has been thanks to us ALL! Furthermore, WE MUST stop this Ignorance that is fed to us “Americans” and not only Us, but globally as well; this Ignorance that is fed to us through via Corporate Media; which is promoting propaganda bias set agendas! we can ratify this all by Protesting As ONE! Lets Get Up and Stand up For our Future and our life!! LET COME TOGETHER AS ONE! we as a people will Prevail! we MUST do something look at the rest of the world for instance Protesting all around us! I’m aware that it sounds radical however the truth in these matters our very much radical yet VERY MUCH true! WE CAN’T DEPEND ON OUR faulty GOVERNMENT anymore we must DEPEND ON OUR SELF! AND UNITE AS ONE MASSIVE MASS

linanda49 September 25, 2011 at 06:09

Some very damning moments–captured with indisputed clarity.
Policeman pushing a woman’s breast up, another digging his thumb & index finger into the back of a subdued person, another brutally pressing groin into street, shin into curb edge! How wonderful that there’s nowhere for brutality to hide anymore.

Aristonico Belargio September 25, 2011 at 06:34

“I praise such courage. I need such courage because in this cause I, too, am prepared to die. But, my friend, there is no cause for which I am prepared to kill. Whatever they do to us, we will attack no one, kill no one, but we will not give our fingerprints — not one of us.
They will imprison us, and they will fine us. They will seize our possessions, but they cannot take away our self-respect if we do not give it to them.
I am asking you to fight! To fight against their anger, not to provoke it. We will not strike a blow, but we will receive them. And through our pain we will make them see their injustice, and it will hurt — as all fighting hurts. But we cannot lose. We cannot. They may torture my body, break my bones, even kill me. Then, they will have my dead body — not my obedience.”
-From the film Ghandi. Finally we see the real courage of the northamericans. I salute you!

li September 25, 2011 at 06:51

Freemasons would fight back now. And they will launch a series secret attack to destroy any protest at beginning, for they would not allow any protesting showing again. And they will treat protester as terrorist. so beware, the battle time is coming, American would face the beast.

JGE September 25, 2011 at 07:05

Before the United States was formed, “Liberty Street” was “Crown Street”.

Patriots, we will take back our country from the elite, those who claim “class warfare” are the ones who have thrown down the gauntlet.

Wall Street, Goldman Sachs, Bush, Paulson, you are a den of thieves!!!

richard October 9, 2011 at 12:32

I say it is class warfare sir, you have had your fun after the next election its time for your nap,go GOP 2012 TEA PARTY IDEAS CAN REFORM OLD DEAD GOP AND SAVE THIS REPUBLIC….

Tiffany September 25, 2011 at 07:05

these are amazing pictures of the truth. keep it up.

Angel September 26, 2011 at 03:22

Its the only way we will see the truth, and its only the beginning!

Debra Isaacs September 25, 2011 at 07:07

Great pics. This just goes to show you we don,t and haven,t had freedom in this country since D.C. took advantage of the 2001 attacks in nyc. I think this is the beginning of a real movement old and young. Thankyou for your great work!

Jeff Sharlet September 25, 2011 at 07:22

Great documentation. Thanks.

Carol Grayson September 25, 2011 at 08:19

Great images… a radical redistribution of wealth is needed… according to need not greed… Too much money spent on war and occupation and annhilating innocent civilians through drone attacks…

mostafa samy September 28, 2011 at 21:23

i appreciate your comment alot
i am from egypt , whe had our revolution , and let me tell you it will take alot of time to make change , but you ave to start
usa spent i trillion dollars on war with iraq , arabs hae never been enemies to usa , your corrupted politician and media made all of this shit , so they can get benefits out of it , just one visit to any arab country and you will know the answer , now they are funding another war in lybia , and they say it is for fuckin human rights , lol, so what about the starving people in somalia , arent this also human rights , but like what 2pac said they have money for wars but cant feed the poor ,

Chris September 29, 2011 at 18:59

Samy, I am so sorry our country has done terrible things to the peoples of other nations. This is very grievous. Our world is changing because of the embrace of the Wicked One. I am a worshiper of Yeshua HaMashiach, and He has shown me things to come. I have seen Him cry over the things that are coming, and I have even had to go to bed from the sickness of seeing those things that are approaching, not just us, but the whole world. It will be most difficult to maintain a pure heart as times are going to be most trying.

Kaito Awesome Fur September 25, 2011 at 08:36

We should all spread this to every single family we have, Now share it on facebook, tell mom and dad as they tell on there workers to workers family from family tells other family as it spread all around global. I feel like watching V for Vendetta from all these picture. Let none find them wanting.

Wayne Roy September 25, 2011 at 09:00

My first instinct is to reply sarcasticly, such as: “And just what made those people think they had anything like the right to assemble, speak, or addess their grievances in this corporations nation?”

Except it’s not nearly as funny when it’s true. We used to be a free democratic republic. A real one, not like all those Eastern European countries that called themselves that. Nowadays we are looking much more and more like East Gerrmany every day.

It amazes me that the people in charge should totally be able to predict the eaction to oppression. We’ve seen it all over the middle east this year. But in stead it seems that they are taking their cues from the ‘before’ side of the page.

I just hope whenever the inevitable revollution comes that something good rises afterward. Unfortunately, it won’t. It’s much easier to break things than build them. So the richest percent or two will keep cheating the rest of us and turning us against each other so we won’t turn on them, until America is basically destroyed.

I give it about a year.

Angel September 26, 2011 at 03:24

I think you right, but its already on a slippery down slide .

Chris September 29, 2011 at 19:05

You are correct about many things. I am a reader of history, and find that those who conquer usually then become like those they kill. The French revolution is a good example that comes to mind. Those people overcame the evil ones and in the end became like the those they killed. I see many bad terrible things coming. Heart breaking things, things that will break the human spirit. I hope to go home soon and be with God and His Son rather than live through the worst that is coming.

Justin September 25, 2011 at 09:26

Tragic yet inspiring. The state once again shows whose side it is on.
From Tahrir Square to Sol Square, I think Paternoster Square may be next.

Cheena Eagle Graham September 25, 2011 at 09:56

Great pix – of terrorists in uniforms!

Does the Mayor not realize that these have already gone around the world?? Does he think this will foster tourism?? LOL – Who would want to visit NYC after seeing this? He must be a fool!

Does the US Gov’t not realize that these have already gone around the world?? And that the world now can see that they don’t practice what they preach? Yes folks, this is what they call Democracy in the States! Y’all come visit us soon, ya hear??

Dude September 25, 2011 at 10:38

How disgusting these cops are just doing their jobs, and these kids who think they are entitled to everything are attacking them

What a bad generation

li September 25, 2011 at 16:33

those cops all belong the secret society, the Freemasons, they work for it, not for American people.

WingMan September 25, 2011 at 20:37

So it’s perfectly fine to attacked unarmed protesters while letting rapists, drug dealers, murders and thieves roam the streets every night? So much for doing their job.

ZaZa September 26, 2011 at 00:49

I agree!

bolo September 25, 2011 at 23:44

from the video footage i have not seen any of the protesters attack the police, the other way around. I am from hawaii and my heart goes out to all doing good and righteous things to get heard. It is not only their fight but everyone in the country and the world. MALAMA ( to take care of) PONO ( to do good) HA (the birth of life).

ZaZa September 26, 2011 at 00:51

I am an American living in the UK where we just saw police here let riotors go nuts on the communities here and they watched.. this is police brutality .. not matter what the reason!! I agree I wish I was there to help..

ZaZa September 26, 2011 at 00:48

These police are using extreme force where it is not called for, don’t they have training on how to handle peaceful protests, I did not see one protester threaten any officer but they got thrown down and maced..that is just nuts!! This is American and they have a right to protest.. against those causing the fianancial fall of our nation!!
these are not a BAD GENERATION..

Angel September 26, 2011 at 03:26

They are entitled to freedom of speech! Things are going to deteriorate fast!

Debra Isaacs September 27, 2011 at 00:37

you won,t think so when those in charge take everything you have worked for!

TheGeo35 September 25, 2011 at 10:42

Incredible, powerful images-Amazing work!

Joel van Lennep September 25, 2011 at 10:45

It’s the same everywhere now: financial collapse due to corporate greed and callousness, leading to public protests, which are ignored by the media and attacked by the police. It’s becoming a mess worldwide. We are just ants underfoot for those bastards. It might well get worse – and maybe not better indefinitely. America, as well as many other countries, is becoming polarized politically, and it really worries me!

ZaZa September 26, 2011 at 00:52

it worries me too, I so agree with you!

Angel September 26, 2011 at 03:28

Arm yourself! It is your 2nd Amendment Right, to protect yourself and family from the Tyrannical Government !!

0robor0 September 25, 2011 at 11:36

America yawns
the world wakes up.

Matt Design September 25, 2011 at 13:20

I thought we were a nation with rights? What happened to the Constitution?

Will it take a Civil war before the government wakes up? Seriously. It’s a simple message: Create jobs and opportunity, stop giving billionaires tax breaks that they will spend on prostitutes and $100/day meal plans.

This is seriously making me sick to my stomach. Every time I see/hear/read something like this, the notion to move to another country gets more and more attractive.

bolo September 25, 2011 at 23:46

i feel u.

ZaZa September 26, 2011 at 00:57

the jerk they put in the White House has thrown out the constitution, he is part of the problem not the solution obviously.. if he wanted the country better he would address the people and listen to their crys here.. but he will see the country distroyed so he can be in comfort.. he is not of the working class he has cheated his way to the top just like the rest that have caused us financial ruin.. it all comes down to GREED!!!.. not caring for each other and the common working man.. they leave all the probelms on the back of the working class.. and so the rich get richer and the working man poorer.. IT MAKES ME SICK TOO.. but I live in another country it ain’t no better here!

Angel September 26, 2011 at 03:29

Except that its spreading worldwide!

ashlee Thompson September 25, 2011 at 13:26

Are you serious DUDE? all they are asking for is truth and justice and do you think that the police and your government are an embodiment an example of truth and justice ?? The police and the government are there to SERVE the people not to corrupt lie and make themselves rich at the peoples expense .. when was the last time you could trust a cop or a politician ??? Dude your missing the point multinationals cops and governments are raping everything held dear to people .. the land the resources you only have to look at the coal seam gas industry the pharmaceutical companies Monsanto the lies of war and terrorism the 9/11 hit by your GOVERNMENT seriously Dude Im not American and I even know all that if those cops took their jobs seriously they be fit not fat and not macing peaceful women who are participating in non violent peaceful protest !!

All support from Spain, where there’s a similiar situation, to those who speak up against the robbery politicians and bankers are perpetrating to ALL of us. It’s the PEOPLE, through generations of hard work, not just rich individuals, who have created the wealth they are now stealing from us. Rise up and claim for your dignity! We’re not goods in the hands of politicians and bankers!

Fuera desde Barcelona! 15-10 tod@s juntos!

Laura September 25, 2011 at 15:01

Thank you for putting this together so that it can be shared widely. Obviously, people should become aware of what is going on. I feel so sorry for these young people who have to learn the hard way that this is not a democracy and the police are not there to protect your constitutional rights. They are there to keep order and protect corporations. Only by everyone finally saying ‘enough’ will anything change.

Spryghte September 25, 2011 at 15:04

I think they should sue the NYPD and the city in a class-action suit. I’d even go after Bloomberg for breach of verbal contract as he did not follow through with his promise that citizens would be “free to express their opinion”. I think it is time for the people to rise up, be heard and take back control.

“Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth.” – Abraham Lincoln

Terry September 25, 2011 at 18:57

I’ve been saying the USA was ripe for revolution. These courageous people are standing up for their rights. They need lawyers backing them, each cop should be charged with assault, the mayor for breach of verbal contract, there needs to be a class action suit against the Private Banks and Wall street for return of homes and funds.

There is a solution. Google Public Banking. It is the only way to take your money back.

jacquelyn weddington September 25, 2011 at 19:13

Please tell me this really isn’t happening…..why isn’t this major news. Bless the children . Does it always have to be the very young. Where am I today. I have nothing to lose any more. Bus fare imposible. I must fight from where I am, but I wish you courage and strength for the long battle ahead. I am so proud of each of you.

Rodrigo September 25, 2011 at 21:57

Very similar to my country in 2001, fortunately I see people who fight for their rights, I see Obama calling for the resignation of all police officers who acted in that manifestation, and the entire senior management police, judge by the facts that all the world sees.

Strength to all.

Rodrigo from Argentina.

JADE September 25, 2011 at 22:05

It exactly like that I hope that stuff like this will open peoples eyes I really do think that the 9/11 attack was allowed to happen so people will be giving up their rights one by one in the name of safety, so now there are so many anti terrorist laws, how long would you think it will take before they start to use it aganist protesters or anyone who gets in their way?
Read that and see how they have their hands in every single country not just the US

Wish i was dead September 25, 2011 at 22:29

Are you kidding me.. Cops says down you get down. This is the game. You wanna play thats fine but be prepared. I love it when i see people stating crap like PICTURES OF THE PEACEFUL PROTEST AND POLICE CRACKDOWN. By definition a gathering our people to disrupt daily life is not peaceful. Its not violent but certainly not peaceful. I am of the opinion that when a officer says leave and you don’t than you are no longer peaceful you are now defying the law and I hope that the men and women we have chosen to protect us do just that. any means necessary.

Jérôme E. Roos September 25, 2011 at 22:51

That type of mindless and unquestioning obedience is exactly what led to Nazi Germany and the Stalinist Soviet Union. If you want to blindly follow authority, you are entirely free to do so — but you will undoubtedly find yourself ending up on the wrong side of history.

bolo September 25, 2011 at 23:56

we might need to distrupt life to move forward. That how america was created.

Joust September 27, 2011 at 10:12

@Wish… you are a tool. Some of us could hope you get your wish. People like you stand in the way of righting wrongs in this nation, HURTFUL wrongs, because you prefer the status quo, the familiar, the comfortable, over what is RIGHT. Standing up to abuse and degradation is right, and as far as ‘peaceful protest,’ please tell me what RIGHT any officer of the law has to tell ANY American citizen to leave an area when they are breaking no laws? Police are supposed to uphold the law, PERIOD. They are not entitled nor empowered to lord over the citizens who sign their paychecks. They do not get to create the rules, only to enforce them. They do not get to order people around because they don’t like what they are doing. Are you serious? “Cop says down you get down.” Why? TOOL. Cop has to have a REASON and his/her discomfort with your LEGAL behavior is not a reason for abuse. Anything less is a police state. You wanna live like that? Fine, go somewhere they do that crap. Let me suggest Arab nations. But take your attitude with you when you go, please. The rest of us intend to continue calling attention to abuse of authority when it happens, not deciding that people who are being CRIMINALLY ASSAULTED by authority figures ‘have it coming’ for daring to stand up for their rights instead of passively and immediately caving to an authority figure giving them an order s/he has no right to offer.

Patriot September 25, 2011 at 22:43

We need a “No Fly Zone” over Wall street, a corrupt Government is attacking it’s own peaceful demonstrators… Just like Libya, Syria, Egypt… Why oh Why doesn’t America step in and save those poor people… Send in the DRONES, BOMB THEM.

it is a shame that we have left it up to our younger generation to do what we should have been doing our self all along. we became lazy. while we were out doing our own thing we became blind to what our government was doing. we put trust in our government to do what was right and closed our eyes to them. now, our children are paying the price physically, emotionally and financially. we are losing our freedom, our strength, our honor and our stability. “president obama…i am ashamed to call you the leader of our country. saying and doing are totally different things. stand up, do what is RIGHT and not what will put more money in YOUR pocket. put money back into the AMERICAN MAN AND WOMAN’s POCKET. place a whole in your pocket as well as others like you and let them fill up pockets who are losing their homes, their insurance, their families; those that are living on the streets going hungry, those standing on the street corners begging for food, standing on the corner selling their bodies to feed their children; those soliders that are fighting to protect all of us EVEN YOU! mr obama, do the right thing, put faith back into man kind.” we need to bring back CHRIST into our lives, our schools, our country, our homes.

Thanks for keeping the world informed and sharing the shocking pictures and videos. We are beginning to see the real face hiding behind the mask of democracy and civil rights. I am more outraged than ever – they won’t stop the peaceful revolution.
We obviously no longer need the main stream media, they are doing a bad job. Desinformation, propaganda, lies.

Greetings from Germany

As is this:

Sometimes this is the way things must be done, especially when there are no more paths to take because of the many laws that make us sit on our own hands and cover our mouths.

John Dolan September 28, 2011 at 23:37

I applaud all of you on the streets and hope the wave grows even higher and stretches further.
I come from a country whose Government have welcomed the IMF in, have unleashed savage austerity cuts on the most marginalized in society and who have made the people pay heavily for the greed of private bankers. Rather than public monies going to the common good they now flow into the black hole left by a tiny minority who were allowed systemically to gamble our future and that of the generations to follow.
Ireland still ‘fumbles in an greasy till’ and as a people we content ourselves in the pat on the backs received from our new friends in the IMF. I hope your actions spark what is, in essence, the human spirit…the act of resistance in the face of injustice.

whats so wrong with loving each other and simultaneously being protected!? versus hating the world and the people/all forms of life that occupy it so it could = protection via war! horrific but history always seems to repeat it self! just look into your history

Dear brave protesters,

Soon they are bound to use tear gas on you. Be prepared and this is what you can do.

Buy face mask (you can get the paper type cheap at the pharmacy). Soak it a little with apple vinegar. Now you are ready even in the front line.

Good luck and my prayers for courage deeds!

A veteran protester.

Thank You #NYPD. You are both careful and wonderfully patient with these moronic anti-American protesters. Keep up the good work #NYPD. And feel free to occasionally beat the daylights out of the more wild kiddies that have made a mockery and a mess of my beautiful city. God Bless America! God Bless Capitalism! God Bless NY! God Bless the #NYPD Oh! And God Bless my 235K a year paycheck! God Bless my Home! God Bless My Summer Home! God Bless My Boat! God Bless My Truck!

Thanks for posting this garbage.

This trash needs to be taken out to the street.

I’m glad the NYPD has stepped up. Someone needs to remind these idiots what reality is all about.
