Having been arrested in a witch hunt against free expression, the incendiary lyrics of the rapper Pablo Hasél continue to inspire activists in Spain.
Pablo Hasél is known in the Spanish rap scene for his incendiary lyrics, but it’s probably safe to say that few of his listeners imagined he’d ever be arrested for them. That’s exactly what happened in his hometown of Lleida on 4 October 2011, the same day that the Catalan Mossos d’Esquadra and the Spanish Audiencia Nacional inaugurated their witch-hunt against 22 of the 15-M protesters present at the 15 June protest against the Catalan parliament’s passage of violent austerity measures. The #cazabrujas seemed like a perfectly orchestrated offensive against freedom of expression and assembly intended to scare the Spanish social movements out of participating in the 15 October day of action. Already out on bail, Hasél remains defiant, saying that he will not be changing his lyrical content anytime soon, no matter how many accusations of “promoting terrorism” they throw at him.
