Root Radio is organizing a three-day non-stop broadcast featuring musicians and artists from around the world to raise funds for displaced refugees on Lesvos.
Earlier this month a devastating fire destroyed the Moria refugee camp on Lesbos, leaving thousands of people without shelter and basic life support. We are speechless about the horrendous disaster that took place, but even more so about the terrible and inhumane living conditions that existed in the camp even before the incident and the profoundly inadequate response of the Greek authorities following the fire.
Thousands of children and their families have been forced to live in the open air for the past week, under makeshift shelters along the highway and in parking lots, with no prospect of appropriate aid or relief any time soon. Under these circumstances, it has become our collective responsibility to take action and support the groups and organizations that are working on the ground to relieve the worst of the suffering.
As Root Radio, we have decided to launch a fundraising campaign in solidarity with the people of the Moria camp and the NGOs and solidarity groups active on the island (visit our website for the full list). We, artists, activists and the people who support the cause, are organizing a three-day non-stop broadcast from 19-21 September. The line-up includes more than 60 artists and musicians from around the world (see the program below). The broadcast will be followed by a compilation to be released in the coming weeks. All benefit will directly go to NGOs and solidarity groups on the island.
We are hoping to raise our collective voices in a global expression of anger, action and, most of all, solidarity. The easiest way to support the displaced children and their families on Lesbos is by donating to one of the organizations listed on our website, all of which are vouched for by our friends and comrades and operate independent from the Greek state and international NGOs.
Tune in. Pay up. Speak out!
