Something is brewing in Greece, Google tells me

People & Protest

It looks like Greece is mobilizing for mass Spanish solidarity protests this evening.

Google came up with a pretty useful tool called Analytics, which allows you to track exactly how many people visit your website, what pages they look at, and where they come from.

Right now, Google Analytics is providing some very interesting perspectives on what’s going on in Greece. The following graph shows the amount of Greek visits over time. Note how they spiked in the last three days, but especially today (the day isn’t even half over yet):

The vast majority of those visits landed on pages referring to Spain. In other words, all of a sudden, the Greeks appear to have become mightily interested in the #spanishrevolution.

Also in comparison to other countries, Greece’s population of 11 million is doing mightily well, considering that the other countries in the top-6 have populations that are between 4 and 30 times larger:

1. 1,761 1.22 00:01:00 94.55% 86.83%
2. 299 1.76 00:01:18 87.63% 70.57%
3. 224 1.33 00:01:16 88.84% 82.14%
4. 154 1.30 00:01:11 96.10% 82.47%
5. 105 1.40 00:01:02 86.67% 80.00%
6. 89 1.39 00:01:31 87.64% 80.90%

At the same time, one blog — keeptalkinggreece.com — wrote a post earlier today saying that a mass mobilization is taking place in at least three cities in Athens as young protesters prepare for a Spanish-style occupation of city squares throughout the country.

Interestingly, this blog — the only one to talk about this so far — just went down (15:20hrs). Its bandwidth limit had been exceeded.

What does all of this tell us about what might happen in Greece tonight — and in days to come? Only time will tell, but my gut feeling says something very big is brewing in the country right now.

EDIT: I was just kindly informed by readers that there is a Facebook group of the Athens protests which has over 30,000 listed followers. A grand total of 35 squares will be occupied. Twitter hashtags are #m15gr and #aganaktismenoi.
